A Rainbow Pregnancy - like no other before it.

As I'm nearing the end of this pregnancy, and as many of my fellow babyloss mama friends are coming closer to the end of theirs, we've been talking a lot about how it all feels for us. I am so so thankful to be a part of two wonderful groups of women who've experienced the loss of a child, many of which are expecting their rainbows along with me. A group of women who share most of the same emotions as I am, a group of women I can be brutally honest with and I know are going to 'get' me.

You see, a rainbow pregnancy is so very different to any other. And I know, I've had a 'normal' pregnancy. They type where everything is perfectly wonderful, where you anticipate the birth of your child with nothing but happiness and excitement.

Once you experienced the loss of a child, whether that's through a miscarriage, or a stillbirth - or unfortunately if you've experienced that more than once, pregnancy is never ever the same again. Ever. You can't just look through rose-coloured glasses anymore. Its hard to be completely hopeful, completely fearless.

Once you've experienced loss, sadly, you are often just waiting for it to happen again. Or at least wondering every single day if something is going to go wrong again.

Every little thing about a rainbow pregnancy is changed.

We might come across as not as excited as others might be about their pregnancy. Believe me, we are. We are so incredibly blessed and we thank God every single day, but we are more reserved. We are wary. Maybe its a coping mechanism, something we can't help, but often, we keep our excitement more hidden that others might, trying to protect ourselves from hurt if anything was to go wrong again.

We really don't care what gender our bub is. Honestly. People always say the cliche 'as long as its healthy', and I said that too before I lost Sebastian, but you don't realise the magnitude of that statement until your baby is not healthy, or dies suddenly. That cliche is just 'something to say' until you've really lived that. And then, it becomes all that really matters. OK, sometimes we might still have a preference for what gender we would have liked, but from most of the BL mamas I've talked to, it doesn't mean a damn thing once we find out boy or girl, if we do. Sure, for us, another little girl would have been perfect. But its not up to me, and God knows what my family is destined to be. I don't care now that its a boy, and in fact, I am so in love with this little man right now, and so excited to be welcoming another boy. Thankfully, I haven't had many disappointed comments when I've said its another boy, but I do try to make you aware that it doesn't matter, that this little boy is loved so fiercely and wholly, and wouldn't be loved anymore if he sported the opposite genitalia. However, so many of my BL friends have had those 'well-meaning' comments, and it makes us both sad and angry that others think it matters. Life is not about having a perfect amount of boys and girls in your family. If you want children, and many, its about each child being a precious gift from God, regardless of gender. Each life is such a blessing.

In my third trimester, many other things come up. A baby shower, the nursery for example. For most pregnant women, these are perfectly wonderful and happy times, but for a babyloss mum, they can be anxious times. Planning and preparing for a baby to come home is a 'normal' thing to do, but for those who have done that, and then come home with empty arms, it isn't all that simple. Not at all. You might think its perfectly innocent to ask a babyloss mum how her nursery is going or if she's having a baby shower, but you don't realise you ask a very loaded question. Loaded emotionally. I speak a little for myself here, but mostly for other babyloss mamas. We knew Seb's condition and we decided to not prepare a room for him. That was our choice. Others have had similar diagnosis and chosen to prepare in faith. And that's OK whatever you choose or chose. And so many more didn't choose anything, as their baby died unexpectedly and they were just left to pick up the pieces. For us, we chose to still believe God would perform a miracle if He so planned it, and we said on many occasions we would be overjoyed to have to put a nursery together last minute. We had a cot in the garage, so really could have had him come home if that was what was in God's plan for our family. However, we chose not to prepare a room for him. 1) because we didn't have a spare room, and to do so would have meant moving children around and rooms around. And 2) I think we chose not to, to protect ourselves from some of the emotions involved.

I have been setting up Rainby's nursery, and that other night I walked in there again (I love being in there), and looked in the cot. I put my hand on top of the quilt and mattress, empty with no baby in it yet. And I was suddenly flooded with emotions of what it would have been like for so many of my friends. Coming home to a nursery set up and waiting for a much-loved baby. But that this baby would not be able to use. My heart broke into a million pieces and I thought of how their mother's hearts broke. As I said, we didn't set up a nursery, and so we protected ourselves from those emotions of having a place for our baby that he would not use. And I understood in that moment, just how hard something that seems like a simple rite of passage for an expectant mother, is for a mother who didn't get to bring home her baby.

Mostly, I am excited and hopeful and full of faith as I set up his room. I do believe that my baby boy will come home and will use that room. But I know its not all that simple. I know the alternative. I have been keeping myself very busy in the last week or so, creating things for my baby's room, preparing for him. Nesting. I think maybe I'm trying to squash those fears a little. Keeping busy so the emotions don't have room to surface. But they will. And that's OK.

I've decided I'm not going to have a baby shower anymore. Yes, I know I was excited about having a rainbow party, but my perfectionism means I will need to 'do it properly' and I just don't have the energy. And then, maybe beneath that reason, I'm a little scared to dive too headlong into the rituals of preparing for a baby, because I know now that something could go wrong. While I do believe that every baby deserves to be showered with love and celebration, I'm hoping I can do that after he's born, after he's home and he's safe in our arms. I'm hoping there'll be plenty of time to celebrate him afterwards.

And so I hope you know that beneath my nesting and creativity and excitement for the little boy I hope to bring home in 6 weeks time, there is still fear. We are expecting him to come home, but its never far from our thoughts what could go wrong. I watch ever so closely now to make sure I feel him move every day, things I never really did with my earlier 3 babies. A thing that became all too real the night I couldn't feel Seb move anymore. And I knew that he was gone. I'm dead-scared to have to do that again. To drink cold drinks, to drink hot drinks, to shine a light on my belly - and have no response. I pray with all that I am, each night that God will keep this baby safe and allow him to come home and be cared for by us for a long long time.

This is life as a babyloss mama expecting another child. Never easy. Never without fear or doubt. Never as innocent as it should be, or once was.

But still so precious and so beautiful. And full of as much love as you could ever think there could be.

31 weeks and approaching dates...

The last trimester of our rainbow pregnancy seems to be flying by! I am starting to get stressed we won't have everything ready for baby. I have his half of a bedroom to set up, quilts and decor to sew, a drawer unit to purchase, cot to set up, and supposed to be having a Baby Shower which I'm not sure I will now.

But also in the back of my mind, I know that it also means that Sebastian's special dates are fast approaching.

As I write this, I am 31.5 weeks. Sebastian passed away at 34 weeks. That's only a few weeks away, and I just don't know how I'll feel that week. Knowing it was the same week (or stage in pregnancy) when his heart stopped at some stage inside of me, where he was supposed to be safe. We knew it was most-likely coming, and have been given an amazing amount of peace from God in the ways and timing that it all happened, but just knowing this same week I lost my baby, will be hard. I don't know if I'll worry the same thing for Rainby, or if I will just be reflective. But I'm well-aware that the time approaches. And then, after it does, carrying on (God-willing) in this pregnancy knowing that I didn't have that time and stage with Sebastian.

It also means that his birthday approaches, and approaches fast. We have a lot on in the next couple months. Not only getting ready for a baby, but we're busy with new family diet plans, and my sister also gets married on 18th August. I will be busy, but I will know that my baby boy's day comes. I want to have time to reflect on him on that day, and am not sure yet if we'll celebrate it or just do something special together. Our little Rainby should be here by then.

His birthday also brings Fathers Day. Last year they fell on the same day. This year, Fathers Day is Sunday 2nd September, and Seb's birthday 2 days later on the 4th. I know that Fathers Day will never EVER be the same again. Not only because we lost a baby. Not only because my husband will always be one child short. But also because he was actually born and we held him last on Fathers Day. It was a most beautiful blessing for my husband that he was able to hold his son on Fathers Day - such an incredible blessing that we would never take back, but with that will also come a little more pain for that day I think.

And then throw in there a new baby.

Life will be be full. Busy, joyful, sad - all those emotions, and very full. And we are on the count-down right now. Its right there, close by, and I know it.

Here is a photo of my beautiful little man growing inside me. Or my bump rather. I've been a bit sporadic with taking photos, but here is one.

I also went back and had a look at my belly at about the same stage of my pregnancy last year with Sebastian. This might be my last comparison pic, but I'll have to try and get one at 34 weeks too, which is when I took the last ones with Seb (a whole family shoot that I'm so glad we decided to take).

{Actually, we are having a Maternity Shoot done just before 34 weeks with Jess from Bella Lei Photography - can't wait!! - and still trying to work out what we'll all wear!}

Baby quilt... in progress...

I have started work on my little Rainby's nursery decor, and it makes me so happy to be able to sew some things for him, and that we're actually expecting (well hoping to God) that he'll be able to use them. I know even that's a long shot when you've been through the loss of your baby like we have, and we certainly don't take it for granted anymore that our baby will come home with us. But I continue to put my hope and trust in God that we will this time.

I decided I want to attempt to make him a quilt for his cot. I looked at some cool designs, as well as some recommendations from friends, and decided on a fairly simple but not-so-simple-looking disappearing 9-patch style. You can see how this design works here and here and here on youtube too. I might do a little tutorial when I do my next one (Lani will be getting one too!)...

I bought a stack of co-ordinating fabrics (so much fun choosing fabrics!) from www.fabric.com (and boy do they have FAST international postage!) and couldn't wait to get stuck into it when it all arrived. So got to cutting out charm squares (5 inches x 5 inches) quickly.

The other morning I started sewing my 9-patches together, and before long I had the 6 blocks done, complete with cutting them up again. The arranging and piecing took a bit longer though! Being a perfectionist and attempting a quilt with a 'random' look might not have been the smartest combination. My hubby took quite a funny video of me on his phone the other day of my process, and my frustration!

But I put them all away and pulled them out again fresh yesterday morning and I worked it all out! It's still 'random' but looks equal enough to my perfectionist eye. Here's the blocks so far...

I'm a little bit in love and can't wait to get the white sashing done and see how it all looks!! LOVING these colours. What do you think??

Now I haven't really done any quilting yet, so I'm not sure how 'perfect' it will come together, but fingers crossed!!!

I also started cutting out some pieces for a Sprocket Pillow today. These look fabulous, and I have lots of fabric left-over so will be making a few I'm sure. Check out the pin below.

I have quite a few charm squares left over so need to find some other things to make too. Thinking some of these ideas might work...

Maybe a little guy like this one?

Or this cutie?

Totally LOVING sewing for my little man. Love him so so much.

And the count down is on! We're 31 weeks today!! Only 9 to go (or less!?) And LOTS to do!!

Rainbow

My family and I are very excited to finally announce that we are expecting our 'rainbow baby' at the end of August 2012.

It has been a bit of a scary ride already, and as many of my fellow babyloss mamas who have had a subsequent pregnancy will know, it will continue to be until this beautiful baby is safely in my arms and coming home (or after even).

We had decided even while we were still carrying Seb - knowing he had a fatal condition and wouldn't be coming home with us, that we still want another baby. And I say 'another baby'. Its not 'trying again' because Sebastian was not a failure. He was fearfully and wonderfully made by a perfect, loving God and Father, however some of these things we just can't explain why God allows. The desire to have a baby to bring home, to care for and to love and nurture did not go away at all. I needed it with all my being. And so I knew that we would be trying to conceive another baby in the months following, when we knew we were ready.

* A disclaimer that I hope is not needed, but I'll put here anyway. This baby will never replace our precious Sebastian. No-one ever could. He is unique and his short life was such a blessing to this Mama's heart. Yes we still want a baby, but we want 'another' baby, not one to replace Seb. This is most certainly baby #5.

What I didn't really calculate was that we would fall pregnant at exactly the time when my due date would be Sebastian's birthday. Yep, by the doctors calculations based on my LMP, this little one was to be due on 4 September, the very same day we said goodbye to our darling, very loved Sebastian. This, I will admit, I have struggled with, especially in light of the stigma of 'replacing' Seb (does anyone really think a subsequent pregnancy would be to do that?). But God has it in His plan. I didn't feel all that good about baby being born on Seb's birthday, and I still don't, and so I am very thankful that I am measuring ahead and the due date is now 29 August. The further away from Seb's b'day the better for me. I mean, how do I celebrate the arrival of one child and yet mourn the first anniversary - one of the hardest days around after the death and funeral - of my lost child? Many people have said to me 'Oh that would be so special' for baby to be born on Seb's b'day, but I just don't feel the same way. And so I'm happy that the EDD is a week before, and I'll be hoping and praying that bubby comes around then too, so I can be home, settled a little and recovered enough to still give my special boy Sebastian the attention and love he deserves on his first birthday - that's very important to me.

And so the first few weeks went by REALLY SLOWLY. I tried to give my worries to God. Worry that this baby might also have T18. Worry that I might have a miscarriage. Just worry. My innocence for pregnancy and birth has been lost when I lost Sebastian and so its going to be a constant battle with worry (and Satan!) to try to enjoy this road. But I will try to continue to lay it at the cross, give it to God because He cares for me. And He is my strength. I want to enjoy this baby and this road to having him/her in my arms, but as most babyloss mamas would know, it just won't be the same as my pregnancies have been previously. And that's OK. Yahweh (God) is with me.

We finally made it to the day of our 12 week scan last week. For the days before - and the morning on - I was very very nervous. Walking into the hospital again was also a reminder of when I was there last - leaving without my baby Sebastian. Going to the Maternal Fetal Medicine unit again - where I was cared for while pregnant with Seb - was tough. The last time I was there, he was kicking around inside me. The last time I was there, his heartrate had begun to slow, in a way preparing us for what was to happen a few days later. But he was alive. And now he's not. So just sitting in that waiting room was harder this time.

But it was amazing to see our little one come up on the screen, and my heart sang with joy and thanks when I saw and heard that little heart beat. Praise God that our baby was alive! I had overcome that first of my fears.

As the scan proceeded, my spirit soared to see my baby. And I was so thankful to hear how happy the sonographer was with what she could see. Our baby looked healthy, no signs of that horrible T18 that changed my life less than a year before. As she looked over each part of baby, she showed us how it seemed to be developing as it should for this stage. She showed us baby's brain - and both Greg and I couldn't help but notice that even at 12/13 weeks this baby had more visible brain tissue than Sebastian did at 19 weeks. No signs of the large black spaces that were large cysts on Seb's brain. Two perfectly forming sides to this baby. I can't tell you how thankful we were - and still are.

She showed us baby's heart, and how even at this early stage, it looked as if blood was going in one side and out the other - Seb had both going in and going out of his right side. Baby's heartbeat was nice and strong at 159bpm.

She showed us baby's hand and feet. Baby was waving to us at one stage and we could see the outstretched hand and fingers. Seb had clenched fists and clubbed wrists (bending backwards) so this was a great comfort. That's not to say that Seb was not perfect in every single way he was created, but just that the way this baby looked, T18 didn't seem to be present. We also saw baby's outstretched, straight feet (not turned in like Sebby's were). Also a great comfort.

Although we (I) chose not to have the NT testing done (I did not want to have an amnio, and I know that false positives are common) - the sonographer told us that T18 was a structural abnormality and could often be seen at this early stage in the major organs.

So baby looks healthy, and we are praising our God for His Blessings!!

Here are some photos of our little 'rainbow' as I will call him/her until we know gender - or maybe even until we have given him/her a name at birth.
Beautiful healthy-looking baby.... we love you so much. Thank you Lord for this blessing!!
And here is my 'bump' at 13 weeks. (I still carried a lot of weight from Seb's birth - was less than 6 months ago - and I'm sure I'll pop a little earlier with baby #5 anyway!!)

13 weeks with 'rainbow' inside...
We have a long road ahead, but one that I will take one day at a time with my God. I know that many different emotions are going to come up along the way - from finding out gender (how will I cope with having another boy?) to being able to actually prepare for this little one to come home - to it all making me miss Seb a little more I'm sure... but we will take it as it comes, and I am trying to enjoy this as much as I can.

We appreciate all your love and particularly your prayers for health for this little one and my pregnancy.

God Bless you all xx
